A Gift from the Duke of Norfolk to the People of Arundel
The Norfolk Centre was gifted to the people of Arundel in 1967 by Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk. Built with the community in mind, it served as a hub for local events and continues to welcome people from across West Sussex to this day. Just a short walk from Arundel Castle, the centre offers both historical charm and practical function.
The 16th Duke was a prominent public figure, best known for organising some of the nation’s most significant state occasions including the funerals of King George VI and Sir Winston Churchill, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and the investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales.

The Howard family, Dukes of Norfolk and Earls of Arundel, have lived at Arundel Castle for over 400 years. Their legacy is woven into the town’s identity. From rebuilding the castle after the Civil War to commissioning Arundel Cathedral, their contributions continue to shape the town.
The Norfolk Centre carries this legacy forward. What began as a day centre for the elderly has grown into a vibrant and inclusive venue open to all. Events range from wreath-making and yoga classes to community dinners and markets.
Following a careful renovation within the last five years, the venue remains as characterful as ever while offering updated facilities, including:
